Mehriban Aliyeva attended the annual assembly of UNESCO Goodwill Ambassadors

Annual assembly of UNESCO Goodwill Ambassadors was held at the organization’s headquarters, October 16. First Lady of Azerbaijan, Goodwill Ambassador of UNESCO Mehriban Aliyeva attended the Assembly.


On October 16th, First Lady of Azerbaijan Mehriban Aliyeva arrived at the headquarters of the organization in Paris to participate in the Annual Assembly of Goodwill Ambassadors.


Annual Assembly of UNESCO Goodwill Ambassadors is of special importance in terms of coordinating the organization’s activity in the spheres of education, public health, culture and other fields, and identifying new directions.


This time, the Assembly is devoted to the report on global monitoring conducted in 2012 to study the condition of education in the world.


Addressing the Assembly, UNESCO Director General Irina Bokova talked of the priorities and strategy of headed by her organization. She said the new agenda of UNESCO includes also implementation of “cultured world and sustainable development” strategy. In this regard, strengthening relations in the spheres of education, science, culture, and creating close cooperation environment is of great importance. Taking into consideration that millions of people in the world are deprived of the right to education, we can see how important development of this sphere is today, said Irina Bokova and emphasized that education for girls should be given more attention.


Discussions were held on education and its development at the Assembly, which got together 22 Goodwill Ambassadors of UNESCO and tens of artists for peace invited from around the world.


Having touched upon, in their speeches, the significance of supporting the initiative put forward by UNESCO aimed at development of education in the world,  Goodwill Ambassadors talked of the projects implemented for this purpose.


Goodwill Ambassadors have been supporting the activity of UNESCO in the name of its ideals all over the world, using their circles of influence. They greatly contribute to the projects implemented by UNESCO, participating in concrete programs of the organization. UNESCO Goodwill Ambassadors have been active in campaigns aimed at reduction of illiteracy, and other similar campaigns. Azerbaijan has also been actively participating in realization of these universal objectives. It is not by chance that one of the priority directions of the activity of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, which is  headed by UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador Mehriban Aliyeva, is development of education.
