A Baku Marathon 2016 to take place following the Heydar Aliyev Foundation’s initiative

A Baku Marathon 2016 will take place, May 1, following the Heydar Aliyev Foundation’s initiative.

The primary objective of the event is to provide support to the development of sport in Azerbaijan, popularize a healthy lifestyle among people, especially the youth, and bring them together for benevolent purposes.

To start on the State Flag Square, the semi-marathon will be 21 kilometres and finish on the Baku Olympic Stadium.

Any person aged over 16 – city residents and visitors – may join the marathon, having got preliminarily registered. Those wishing to participate in the Baku Marathon 2016 may approach registration points installed at trade centres of Baku or visit the website of the Baku Marathon 2016 (www.bakumarathon.az), from April 11 to April 25. For this purpose, a registration form should be filled in, a copy of the identity card produced (students should, in addition, submit a copy of their student’s card), and pay a fee required for participation.

As the funds required for students’ participation in the Marathon will be covered by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, students will not be asked to pay a fee while getting registered. Therefore, students need to produce a copy of their student’s card while passing registration. Natural persons will pay 20 AZN, while those participating on behalf of a legal person shall be required to pay 100 AZN.

It should be mentioned that so far similar marathons have been arranged in such cities as London, Paris, Boston, New York, Chicago, Berlin, Barcelona, Istanbul etc. A marathon’s distance is 42 km, while a semi-marathon is 21 km.

Along with being a sports event, marathons are also arranged for a charitable purpose. The famous London Marathon held in 1981 was listed in the Guinness Book of Records as a biggest charitable marathon. At the moment, only charitable- purpose marathons are held in a number of world countries.

It should be mentioned that the money collected in the Baku Marathon will be directed to a project to be implemented by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation for children deprived of parental care.

Winners of the marathon will be rewarded as follows: 1st place – 3000 AZN, 2nd place – 2000 AZN, and 3rd place – 1000 AZN.
