Conference “Geopolitical and Energy Policy of the South Caucasus – Azerbaijan the Focus of Attention” in Bucharest

A conference entitled “Geopolitical and Energy Policy of the South Caucasus – Azerbaijan the Focus of Attention” is held in Bucharest, with the support of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation.


The Conference was attended by deputies of the Azerbaijani Parliament, Romanian intelligentsia, writers, political analysts, heads of research institutes operating in Bucharest, employees of the national security departments of the Administration of the Romanian President, the Ministry of Economy and the Embassy of Azerbaijan, the leadership of the Defence Institute, as well as members of the Azerbaijan-Romania Youth and Culture Association. 

Having mentioned that the South Caucasus was one of the regions of the world where geopolitical processes are taking place, Director of the Romanian Representative Office of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation Igbal Hajiyev talked about the Daghlyg Garabagh conflict, and noted that this problem has impeded the region’s development.

Deputy of the Milli Majlis, head of the friendship group for antiparliamentary relations with Romania Azay Gouliyev talked about the geophysical situation in the South Caucasus and mentioned that Azerbaijan was the largest and most developed state of the South Caucasus both by its territory, number of population and the economy. “It is no coincidence that Azerbaijan accounts for the 80 per cent of the South Caucasus region’s gross domestic product”, - he said.

A.Gouliyev emphasized that Azerbaijan has been of significant importance in terms of delivering Azerbaijan’s energy resources to the European markets. Saying that Azerbaijan was a part of democratic Europe, the deputy noted that an agreement has been signed between Europe and Azerbaijan on simplifying the visa regime.

Talking also about the Daghlyg Garabagh conflict, the deputy mentioned that 20 per cent of Azerbaijan’s territory was occupied by Armenia. He said there is a need for Europe to express its position on this issue.

Director of the Study of the Turkic Languages and Eastern Researches Institute, the first Romanian ambassador to Azerbaijan Tahsin Jamil, deputy of the Milli Majlis Ganira Pashayeva, Director of SOCAR’s Romanian Office Hamza Karimov, Director of “AGRI LNG Project” Mitika Savu, Chief editor of “Geopolitical” magazine Vasile Simileanu delivered a speech at the event.
