Azerbaijani medal winners of Olympic Games have been granted the monthly scholarships and diplomas of Heydar Aliyev Foundation.

Majority of 237 schools built so far on the initiative of Heydar Aliyev Foundation which finds priority to render huge attention to sport like all other spheres of the public life include sport grounds, gyms equipped with necessary appliances. Propagating sport among youth and children the Foundation has sponsored a lot of competitions held in Azerbaijan. International Chess Festival ‘Presidential Cup’ held in 2007 and 2008 in memory of national leader Heydar Aliyev was organized due to support of the Foundation.

Athletes having won medals in Barcelona, Atlanta, Sydney, Athens, Beijing Summer Olympic Games visited September 2 Heydar Aliyev Foundation.

Sportsmen were informed of objectives of the Foundation established in memory of national leader Heydar Aliyev.

Olympians viewed the exhibits taken from the archive of the great leader reflecting separate eras of his activity, numerous documents reflecting the very various moments of the genius person’s life and creating a detailed idea of the entire history of Azerbaijan, as well photo stands talking of large-scale activities of outstanding political figure Heydar Aliyev. Athletes were informed the national leader had always rendered huge attention to development of sport.

Then, Mrs Mehriban Aliyeva, President of Heydar Aliyev Foundation, Goodwill Ambassador of UNESCO and ISESCO, MP, met with the Olympians.

Winner of Sydney Summer Olympics Zemfira Meftahaddinova and winner of Beijing Summer Olympic Games Elnur Mammadli expressed gratitude on behalf of Olympians to President Ilham Aliyev and President of Heydar Aliyev Foundation Mrs Mehriban Aliyeva for attention rendered to sport.

They stated sport is rapidly developing in Azerbaijan over the past years due to the state concern to sport which results in victories our sportsmen achieve in Olympic Games, world and European championships, international competitions.

Emphasizing medal winners of Olympics are pattern to children and youth Mehriban Aliyeva proposed organizing meetings of the Olympians with children at children homes and boarding schools. The President of the Foundation said such meetings will increase interest of children in sport.
