President Ilham Aliyev visits the Saint Mary Albanian Church in Nij settlement of Gabala

On May 15, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva and their daughter Leyla Aliyeva visited the Saint Mary Albanian Church in Nij settlement of Gabala.

The head of the state and the first lady were given information about the works done in the church.

It was noted that basic restoration works were launched by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation in the Saint Mary Albanian Church in 2019, completing them on November 7, 2020.

Restoration works were carried out in accordance with the Athens Charter, without causing any damage to either internal or external design elements. Some 50 percent of bricks and stones of the church building were restored during the restoration, replacing its ceiling and floor. The yard was improved, fenced, and a spring was created within the area.

The lower part of the church was built in the 12th century. Some of the demolitions of this part were restored. Construction of the second part was continued in 1898, and restored.

The Saint Mary Church is the biggest cathedral church in Azerbaijan.
