President Ilham Aliyev and First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva become familiar with restoration and conservation works at Pir Omar Sultan Sanctuary in Shamakhy

President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva paid a visit to Pir Omar Sultan Sanctuary in Shamakhy, May 25.

Following the Heydar Aliyev Foundation’s initiative, necessary conservation and restoration works are planned to be performed here.

According to the information given, research works are being carried out in order to find out whether the Pir Omar Sultan Sanctuary related to Abu Sirajeddin Omar Avakhyli, the founder of the Khalvati Sufi school. Archaeologists think this sanctuary is the first place for dervishes associated with the sect of Khalvati both in Azerbaijan and in the world at large. During the preliminary archaeological diggings carried out in a 133 square-metre area, remnants of a tomb related to the 14th century and artefacts testifying to its relating to Pir Omar Avakhyli were discovered. The tomb was built using river stones and rocks. The tomb’s entry door with the arch-shaped top is on the southern side. Two grave cameras surrounded with a single-layer baked bricks, glazed and non-glazed ceramic samples, and coins related to various eras were found in the tomb. Numerous humans were buried around the sanctuary. Among them, epitaphs on two graves being examined on the eastern side of the tomb can be evaluated as a significant historical source testifying that the Pir Omar Sanctuary related Pir Omar Avakhyli, the founder of the Khalvati Sufi teaching.

With a view to continuously and efficiently performing the research works, as well as protecting the sanctuary against natural and anthropogenic impacts, the monuments were covered using light structures.
