Baku Marathon-2022 was held on the initiative of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation

On May 15, the 5th Baku Marathon was organized on the initiative of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation. About 15 thousand participants competed at the “Baku Marathon 2022”.

 

Along with Azerbaijani citizens, foreigners living and working in Azerbaijan, as well as people from a number of other countries had applied to participate in the marathon. Participants from USA, Germany, UAE, the Great Britain, China, France, Cameroon, Nigeria, Kazakhstan, Russia, Turkey, Ukraine, Uganda etc. were among those registered for participation.

 

Having been organized since 2016, the Baku Marathon aims to support the development of sports, and promotion of a healthy lifestyle.   

 

Held under the slogan “Win the Wind” for the fifth time, the Baku Marathon was this time held along a different route. Both the start and the finish points were on the State Flag Square. Covering a 21-km distance, the marathon passed along the following route: the State Flag Square – the Seaside Boulevard – the Baku International Seaport - the Neftchiler Avenue – the Baku White City Boulevard – the Khagani Rustamov Street – the Baku White City Boulevard – the 8th November Avenue, part of the Yusif Safarov Street – intersection of the Afiyaddin Jalilov and the Uzeir Hajibeyli streets, the Uzeir Hajibeyli Street crossing the Javanshir Bridge – the Neftchiler Avenue (The Government House, the Museum Centre, the Puppet Theatre, the Maiden Tower, the Azneft Square) - the Baku Cable Railway, the Bayil Square, the Bibiheybat Road (the Water Sport Palace) and, moving along the Seaside Boulevard (back of the Water Sport Palace, the Baku Crystal Hall) – the State Flag Square.

 

Persons with Down syndrome and those with physical restrictions also took part in the Marathon. First start was made for persons with Down syndrome, with the second one being for physically restricted people. The 3rd start was for general participants.

 

Winners of the Baku Marathon 2022 were chosen on two categories. Men and women competed for first three places on the marathon route. The winner of the 1st place was rewarded with 3000 AZN, while the winners of the 2nd and 3rd places received 2000 AZN and 1000 AZN, accordingly, being additionally awarded medals and certificates.

 

Winners among men: 1st place – Rinas Akhmadeyev (Russia), 2nd place – Omar Alkan (Turkey), 3rd place – Vladimir Marchik (Czech Republic).

 

Winners among women: 1st place – Valentina Veretskaya (Ukraine), 2nd place – Dilek Ozturk (Turkey), 3rd place – Valentina Poltavskaya (Ukraine).

 

1000 participants who have crossed the Finish line were awarded special medals of Baku Marathon 2022. There were also new nominations at Baku Marathon 2022: winners on 5 age categories were chosen among men and women (18-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60+).

 

Moreover, awards were presented on the nominations “Be Young” (Azercell), “Oldest participant who crossed the Finish line”, “First corporate participant who crossed the Finish line”, and “Best creative costume” among students on the men and women categories. All volunteers who have provided support to marathon participants and in the organization of the competition will be granted certificates.


An entertainment zone was created on the Flag Square for marathon participants, residents of the city, and the guests. Here were held various entertaining and concert programmes, competitions, as well as sports events during the competition.  


“Azercell Telecom” is the exclusive partner of the Baku Marathon 2022. The Marathon was organized with the support of the Seaside Boulevard Department and the Regional Development Public Association. Executor of the project is Sport Marketing Group (SMG), sponsored by “Baltika 0”.

 

Such marathons had previously been organized in such cities as Barcelona, Berlin, Boston, Chicago, Istanbul, London, New York, Paris etc. Full marathon’s distance is 42 km, with a half-marathon being 21 km. As the marathon had aroused great interest in residents of regions, in 2017, a half-marathon was held in Ganja city.
