A conference in Tbilisi dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Democratic Republic of Azerbaijan

Scientific conference, exhibition and official reception entitled “The first secular parliamentary republic of the Orient: values and heritage”, dedicated to the 100th anniversary of establishing the Democratic Republic of Azerbaijan, took place in Tbilisi, with the organizational support of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation and Azerbaijan’s embassy in Georgia.

 

Participants of the event – Executive Director of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation Anar Alakbarov, Ambassador Dursun Hasanov and other officials first visited the monument to the National Leader in the Heydar Aliyev Park, centre of Tbilisi. Then, the delegation visited the Botanical Garden in Tbilisi and visited the graves of the builders of the Democratic Republic of Azerbaijan in the old Muslim Cemetery.

 

Speaking at the conference, Ambassador Dursun Hasanov gave information about the activities of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, led by First Vice-president of the Republic of Azerbaijan Mehriban Aliyeva, both in Azerbaijan and beyond its borders, which cover various fields.

 

The diplomat said that 100 years earlier, in Tbilisi, Azerbaijan was declared the first democratic republic in the Orient. Today’s republic is the successor of the Democratic Republic of Azerbaijan. Such values as democracy, secularism, religious and cultural diversity, we have inherited from the Democratic Republic.

 

In his speech, deputy minister of education, science, culture and sport Levan Kharatishvili said he has witnessed the great development path Azerbaijan has been through. He underscored that relations between the two countries have been successfully advancing in all spheres, including science and education. 

 

President of Georgia’s National Academy of Science (GNAS), academician Giorgi Kvesitadze talked about the dynamically developing relations between our countries in various fields. He said the energy and transport projects jointly implemented by the two leading countries of the South Caucasus - Azerbaijan and Georgia, serve the improvement of wellbeing of our peoples.

 

Doctor of history, department head of the History Institute under the Azerbaijan National Academy of Science Ilgar Niftaliyev gave information about the history of establishing the Democratic Republic of Azerbaijan, its traditions, and the novelties typical of that time.

 

Adviser to the director of the Heydar Aliyev Centre Rashad Kerimov underscored that thanks to the successful policy of national leader Heydar Aliyev, our independence was preserved and strengthened. He made comparative analysis of the Republic of Azerbaijan with the Democratic Republic of Azerbaijan, bringing to attention the hardships the country have been through in both periods.

 

Leading researcher of ANAS’s History Institute, doctor of philosophy Lamiya Gafarzadeh, in her speech, talked about the achievements reached by the Democratic Republic of Azerbaijan in culture and education, as well as equality of human rights in the country. She mentioned the national content of the Parliament of the Democratic Republic of Azerbaijan, its being truly of democratic nature.

 

Member of GNAS Ramaz Khurodze said that materials being preserved in Georgia’s archives have not been fully studied yet, underscoring the importance of jointly studying our glorious history by scholars of both the countries.

 

A documentary was shown at the conference about the history of the Democratic Republic of Azerbaijan.

 

An exhibition dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Democratic Republic of Azerbaijan was organized by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation. Photos and documents, video and audio materials related to the Democratic Republic of Azerbaijan were demonstrated at the exhibition.

 

An official reception on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of establishing the Democratic Republic of Azerbaijan took place with the organizational support of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation and Azerbaijan’s Embassy in Georgia.

 

Speaking at the event, Ambassador Dursun Hasanov gave information about the history of establishing the Democratic Republic of Azerbaijan, the first democratic republic in the Muslim Orient, and achievements reached during the period of its existence.

 

Deputy foreign minister of Georgia Lasha Darsalia congratulated the participants of the event and our people on the 100th anniversary of establishing the Democratic Republic of Azerbaijan. She appreciated the establishment of the first democratic republic in the Orient 100 years ago as a significant historical event.
